Frith St W1
Replacing a double-glazed pane in a busy location like Frith Street, Soho, requires precision and speed to minimise disruption to the local footfall and businesses. Whether it’s a shopfront or a traditional sash window, a cracked or misted unit can compromise both security and energy efficiency. Our team specialises in navigating the tight access of W1, providing high-quality, made-to-measure glass replacements that meet modern thermal standards while respecting the architectural character of this iconic London street.
Window Frosting
To enhance privacy without sacrificing natural light, we applied high-quality frosted film to the glass, custom-cutting it to follow the elegant curve of the window frames. By meticulously templating the arch-top shape, we created three perfectly uniform frosted arches that give the glass a high-end, etched appearance. This subtle addition provides a clean, modern aesthetic that obscures the view from the street while still allowing the Soho sun to brighten the interior.

Misted double glazing
Working on Frith St in the heart of Soho means managing constant foot traffic while handling heavy glass. For this misted double glazing replacement, the failed seals had let in moisture, leaving the windows looking cloudy and unprofessional.
Because we were working on a multi-storey building directly above the pavement, safety was the priority. We deployed a dedicated banksman at ground level to manage the busy Soho crowds and ensure a safe exclusion zone while we carried out the delicate task of removing the blown units.
The Frith St Challenge:
-
Crowd Control: With a banksman on-site, we could safely navigate the logistics of a high-street glass swap without putting the public at risk.
-
Precision Handling: We carefully removed the misted panes and replaced them with high-efficiency double glazing, instantly restoring the building's thermal performance and clarity.

Restoring Acid-Damaged Glass on Old Compton St
For this project, we faced a pane that had been targeted with acid-etching graffiti, a common issue for Soho shopfronts that usually requires expensive, full-pane replacement. Instead of removing the glass, we used a specialized restoration approach:
-
Surface Preparation: We thoroughly cleaned the pane to neutralize any remaining acidic residue and ensure a smooth surface for the film.
-
Concealing the Damage: By applying a high-quality frosted film, we completely masked the permanent etching left by the acid.
-
Aesthetic Enhancement: We custom-cut the film into three elegant arches, transforming a vandalized window into a decorative feature that adds privacy for the interior while still allowing natural light to filter through.
-
Cost Efficiency: This method saved the client the significant expense of bespoke glass replacement and the logistical nightmare of installing large units on such a narrow, busy street.
This solution provided an immediate "new look" for the business, reinforcing its professional image without the downtime of traditional glazing repairs.
Casement Removal
On this project, external access via ladders or towers was impossible, so we had to remove the entire window casement from its frame to work from the safety of the interior. By carefully un-hanging the unit, we were able to:
-
Protect the Public: Avoided blocking the busy Soho pavement with bulky equipment.
-
Precision Fitting: Successfully replaced the pane and applied the arched frosted film in a controlled environment to ensure a bubble-free, "etched glass" finish.
-
Full Restoration: Re-installed the complete casement, seamlessly masking the previous acid damage without the need for expensive external scaffolding.
This "inside-out" approach saved the client the cost of street permits and ensured the business could stay open while we worked.
Crittall Windows
Working on Crittall windows on a street as busy as Old Compton Street is a true test of patience. These iconic steel frames are notoriously thin and rigid, leaving zero margin for error when removing old putty or fitting new double-glazed units. Unlike modern uPVC or timber, there’s no "give" in the frame, so every measurement has to be spot on.
Because external access wasn't feasible, we had to carefully de-hang the entire steel casement to work from the inside. It’s a delicate balancing act—handling heavy glass within a slim, historic frame while ensuring the hardware isn't compromised. Despite the technical difficulty, we managed to strip back the acid damage, fit the new panes, and apply the frosted arches to a perfect finish. It’s a specialized skill, but the result keeps that classic Soho character intact without the massive cost of a full replacement.
